7 Easy Tips to Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine

The flowers are blooming, the days are longer, and the weather is warming up. Signs of spring are all around us and that gives a lot of people the itch to clean and organize. It’s the perfect time to help your clients transition from their winter skincare to a spring routine.

After months of cold, dry air outside and warm, dry air inside, our skin is more than ready for a little refresh. With changing temps, our skincare products are ready for an overhaul too.

Here are seven tips to help your clients spring clean their skincare routine.

1 | Get rid of old products.

Did you know that both skincare products and makeup can expire? The challenge is that, unlike food, not all products have an expiration date on the package.

Typically unopened products can last up to two years. Once a product has been opened, it should be used within a year unless otherwise noted on the package.

Not only can products lose their effectiveness, but they can also harbor bacteria and germs that can cause infections or breakouts. After cold and flu season is a great time to toss the products that have been hanging around too long.

2 | Switch up your cleanser.

With warmer weather and more time spent in the sun comes more sweat and that means more potential for clogged pores. Your cleanser needs to work a little harder to keep your skin clear.

Either a more acidic/astringent cleanser or a gentle exfoliating cleanser will help control sweat and shine from overactive oil glands. You should make a recommendation best for your client’s skin type.

3 | Exfoliate to rejuvenate.

Dry conditions during winter lead to dry skin and a build-up of dead skin cells. Exfoliation helps get rid of those excess skin cells, revealing fresher-looking skin and increasing collagen production.

Be sure that your clients don’t overdo it. Exfoliating twice a week should do the trick without irritating the skin. Look for salt or sugar scrubs with fruits enzymes like papaya or pineapple because these exfoliants will be gentler on skin getting more UV exposure.

4 | Use a lightweight moisturizer.

The dryness of winter means that many of your clients have been using a heavier moisturizer to keep their skin properly hydrated.

As humidity and heat increase during the spring, a lighter-weight moisturizer will hydrate without leaving the skin greasy or oily. More oil leads to clogged pores and possible breakouts.

A tinted moisturizer is a great option for those who want a little coverage but want to skip the heavy foundation in warmer seasons.

5 | Visit a pro for a post-winter chemical peel.

Exfoliating will help, but a chemical peel really works on that top layer of the skin to eliminate signs of winter dryness and dullness. Spring is a great time to encourage clients to try chemical peels to reveal dewy, youthful skin, but hurry because once summer is here chemical peels are out.

You can even offer a promotion on chemical peels to entice new clients who are ready to freshen up their skin for spring and summer.

6 | Boost your SPF.

Sun protection is a daily must, even during the winter, but spring is the time to bump it up as we spend more time in the sun and the days stretch longer.

Encourage your clients to use a minimum SPF 30 and ideally SPF 50 when outside. Sun damage from UV exposure is the biggest impact on how well or how poorly skin ages. It’s also important to reapply when swimming, sweating, or spending hours outdoors.

7 | Use retinol products at night.

Retinol products can make skin more sun-sensitive so it’s a good idea to limit use to evening skincare. Retinol increases cell turnover, meaning there are more new cells on the skin’s surface. While this helps reduce signs of aging, it also means the cells are more sensitive to sun damage.

Cutting back on retinol products to nighttime in the spring and summer will reduce sun-sensitiivity and decrease the risk of burning and sun damage. Using daily SPF and wearing a hat while in the sun can also help protect the face.

The Bottom LIne

The temperature, humidity level, and our lifestyle all change in the spring so it’s a good time to reevaluate your skincare routine. Everyone wants to feel refreshed in the spring so help your clients get the best skin possible by switching up products and utilizing professional treatments.
